Don Hyatt on Azaleas

Cheverly, MD, April 16, 2012:  Native azalea enthusiast Don Hyatt presented a program/travelogue on America's native azaleas to members and guests of the Cheverly Garden Club.  He showed azaleas and other native plants in their Appalachian habitat in Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia as well as West Coast varieties in Northern California.

Cheverly president Ann Gardenhour and member Harold Belcher introduced Hyatt.

 

Hyatt donated several of his azalea watercolor prints for door prizes:

District I Awards 2011-2012

Beltsville, MD, March 3, 2012:  Behnke's Nursery hosted District I's annual awards ceremony.

Cynthia Chesley (above center) of Tanta-Cove Garden Club received the District I Award of Honor; Marge Stembel (left) of Woodmoor Garden Club received the Perennial Bloom Award; and Marian Moreland (right) of Mount Airy Clay Breakers Garden Clubs was honored for Perennial Achievement in a Garden Club.

Awards Chairman Sally Oconnell presented an Outstanding Garden Club Achievement Award (very large club division) to Vira Sisolak, president of Capitol Hill Garden Club.

Oconnell presented an Outstanding Garden Club Achievement Award (large garden club division) to Donna Aldridge, president of Paint Branch Garden Club. 

 

Oconnell  presented an Outstanding Garden Club Achievement Award (medium garden club division) to Lydia Barbour, president of Tanta-Cove Garden Club.

 On behalf of Goddard Garden Club, Arleen Ankeney accepted a certificate for hosting the membership table at Behnke's Garden Day in June.

District Director Visits Tanta-Cove Garden Club

Fort Washington, MD, February 1, 2012: What a fabulous meeting the Tanta-Cove Garden Club held at the home of a club member! I was so thrilled to be included!

The program given by Landscape Designer, Cheryl Corson on Rain Gardens was extremely informative and she was a very energetic and fun speaker. She highly recommended the publication Rain Gardens Across Maryland! She also suggested a website to help determine which plants to include in a garden for attracting butterflies - remember they need plant hosts for the eggs as well as a food source and animals prefer multiples of the same plants!

As a even bigger bonus, the Tanta-Cove Garden Club held a Flower Show as well in different rooms of the hostess' house. The designs and horticulture were really inspiring! Here are just a few pictures of the many exhibits.

Our Olde Dominion Holiday

December 3, 2011: Forty-five District I members and guests took a holiday tour of Virginia. We started with a buffet dinner at historic Hanover Tavern with extra time to enjoy their holiday festival. We then had a magical early bird tour of the GardenFest of Lights at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens in Richmond followed by a "tacky lights" tour of Richmond residences decorated for the holiday.

Across the road was Hanover County Courthouse, the oldest courthouse still in use in the United States. It was the site where Patrick Henry argued against The Parson's Cause.

Ankeney Feted at Franklin's Fundraiser

Hyattsville, MD, November 8, 2011: District I members participated in the annual eat, drink and shop fundraiser at Franklin's Restaurant, Brewery & General Store. District I board members held a meeting before lunch, The board accepted the resignation of David Healy as Director and the appointment of Danielle Brabazon as Director and David Healy as Treasurer.

On behalf of the Prince George's County Beautification Committee, Charmane Truesdell (r below) presented this year's Golden Trowel Award to Ted and Arleen Ankeney.
